Everything comes from small beginnings. Television and radio does too. The television before it became the television we are using now started from rotating-disc technology to transmit pictures over wire. Through time it was reinvented and it became better and better up to the present. For the radio it started as a simple recording machine until it became to what we know now.
Back in the days, our ancestors didn’t have radio or television to entertain them. I remembered my grandmother telling me that back in the days if you television it means you are rich. They only have black and white television and sounds isn’t something big deal, they are already happy with simply watching pictures moving. They didn’t bother looking for sounds. She compared her time to the present. She told me that the youth now are more interested in what is shown on the television than being with our own family. She said that we, the youth, are more interested in useless information that we get from the television than spending quality time and interacting with our families. She said the same thing with the radio, she said that before the parents used to read stories or pass the stories about the family to their kids, now she could see us sleeping with our earphones. She said that yes, maybe the television brought new horizons in spreading information easily, but it has also brought division in the family.
My grandmother told me that through the passing of time the purpose and uses of the television and radio drastically change. She told me that there was a time when television was used to deceive and brainwash the people. There was a time when it was used for purely political reason. Now, television and radio are used not only to entertain but to also advertise products. The lives of the people are now centered on it. It is especially the youth that’s greatly affected by the power of media. We are drawn to buy unnecessary things because of it. We are experiencing colonial mentality because of the things we see.

Print Media
Candy. Meg. Cosmopolitan. Preview. These are examples of the magazines that I read. These are examples of magazines that I look for in a book store every month. I have a faint idea on how these magazines are produced; I only know that these magazines are produced a month or two months before its release date. I didn’t know that producing a magazine could be so time consuming and difficult.
Our class project for our CA class is to make a magazine, produce at least 50 copies of it and sell it. We were only allowed to give Php30 each as starting money and we were to solicit or ask advertisers to help finance our magazine.
I was assigned to the circulation department. My job is to sell the finish product in the allotted time. We have to sell the 50 copies of our magazine, which by the way costs Php50, by end of day of Tuesday (Oct. 2, 07) because we have to pass the complete report the next morning. Selling our magazines is supposed to be my job but my head department gave me another assignment which is to find a printing press. Christine and I searched and rummage around the UST campus in pursuit for an affordable her printing press. I remember it was after class hours that we walked side by side in the streets of Dapitan when we found the printing press, NITS, and that’s where we printed our magazine. When I got home, I told my mom about my adventure in search for a printing press. My mom told me that maybe she could use some strings in her work so that we could print our magazine for free, or if not free for a discounted price. The next day I told our admin, Pam, that I have talked to my mom and I told Pam all the things that my mom told me. I told Pam that they should give me the lay-out as soon as possible so that I could give it to my mom. At that time, the free printing would be a great help because we were lacking funds and we still don’t have much advertisers and solicitations. Days passed and the planned released date of our magazine was nearing and yet no lay-out was given to me. By the time the lay-out was given to me (Sept. 26, 07), it was already too late. My mom couldn’t use her connection anymore. It was a Thursday (Sept. 27, 07) when I came to school early to go with Pam (admin), Jeseth(editor-in-chief), and Deedah(sponsors) to the printing press that we found before. We had our magazine priced unfortunately our funds was short and we couldn’t print it fully colored. The employee in the printing store also said that it would only take two hours for the printing. We decided to make a few changes in the lay-out and to add more pictures. Out of the blue, we had an idea to make the changes in my home because we have the program that was used by the lay-out artist in my laptop. After our classes, at around 7pm, Margo and I went to Alex’s house to borrow her laptop because we another. It was around 8pm when I together with four of my blockmates went to my house (Christine, Pam, Margo & Miguel). We didn’t sleep so that we could finish the lay-out. We went to school at 6:30am the following day (Sept.28, 07) because I have PE class. After my PE class we went to the printing press together and printed our magazine. I was suppose to go to school the next day to help sell the magazine, unfortunately it wasn’t allowed by my mom first because it was my birthday (happy birthday to me!!), and second because I was sick. By Monday, the magazines were all distributed already and so I wasn’t able to sell anymore.
From the experience, I learned that making a magazine isn’t easy. It is easier said than done. I now appreciate more the magazines that I read knowing that it is the blood and sweat of the people behind it.

SNAIL-mail to E-mail
It has been days since I started thinking what to write to my entry about Information Revolution. If not for my mom and her best friend’s story I wouldn’t have made an entry that’s personal and would have resorted in discussing what our professor had lectured.
Here it goes.
Last night, right after my mom entered our home and even before she said her usual line, “I’m home”, she immediately asked me to open her e-mail. Well, I didn’t ask her why or what’s the urgency because this had become a routine since last year. What’s the reason? Tita Noella, her best friend, texted her and said that she had already sent the pictures of her new home. FYI. My mom is a frustrated interior designer. She loves watching the Lifestyle channel. My mom helped Tita Noella in designing her home-through internet. My mom sends Tita Noella the colours that matched a specific room. Tita Noella, on her side takes pictures of the furniture that she have. All these were done through e-mail.
Some to think of it, I remember how they contact each other 5 yrs ago. My mom isn’t a techie person and she dislikes using the computer. She studied using it for the sake of her work. My mom and Tita Noella used to write each other through snail-mail. I remember the tons of albums that she has which contain not our pictures but of Tita Noella. But those were the days—my mom now opens her e-mail regularly instead of opening mail envelopes. She also has cd’s and usb’s instead of tons of albums.
Recently, my mom saw me chatting with a friend who migrated to Canada through Yahoo Messenger. She also saw my friend through the web cam and she thought that maybe she and Tita Noella can do that as well. She asked me to teach her how to use the YM, so that she can recommend it to Tita Noella and they could do it. LOL.
I thought that through the years, there has been definitely an Information Revolution—the spread of new media themselves, and this I have seen with the story of my mom. The new tools of information, specifically the e-mail/YM, help bridge people closer easier and more conveniently.

I SECOND THE MOTION!
ALIENS ON THE RADIO
July 31, 2007, 10:00pm. Now in the mood to study and do school stuffs. Well, you might say that’s probably late, the thing is I am a night person. I am more productive when everything is silent and I have watched all the shows I want to watch. I crept to my brother’s room and took the laptop from his desk and started working. I went to the eleap site and logged in. Started listening to the mp3 file of the War of the Worlds, soon got bored and finally decided to just download the file. I then started writing the draft for the entry for information revolution. I slept at around one in the morn.
Aug. 1, 2007, 7:30am. I woke up early to continue listening to the 1938 broadcast of HG Wells' War of the Worlds by the Mercury Theater. Soon, I got into it. I was absorbed. I was fascinated and thought it was rubbish. I personally don’t believe in UFO’s, aliens nor Martians or the like. I was even irritated to the people of that time for their immaturity, rushing to conclusions and doing things without thinking first. Let me give you first a background on the story.
The broadcaster was saying that near the 20th century the world was being watched closely by intelligences greater than man, yet as mortal as their own. The researchers in the American observatory were had an astronomical watch over the planet Mars. They said that Mars had three explosions. Some of the people also believed that there are living intelligences that live on Mars which was opposed by the astronomers. Then one day a weird looking meteor fell in a New Jersey backyard. Event soon followed after the meteor’s crash and then something came out, a strange being which has heat ray and killed the people near it. That’s when the people concluded that the strange being came from the army of Mars and is now invading our world.
Soon I was faced with the question, “Was I affected by it like the other listeners?”
ANSWER: If I was living at that particular period, listening to the radio drama, yes I would have been affected by it just like the others. If I was in that time, I would have thought that whatever the broadcaster’s saying is true, and totally forgetting the fact that it is just a drama. I would have believed every word that he said. This is because of the lack of other means of finding out whether what he is saying is true or not. Actually, the radio drama was really convincing. The broadcaster is talking to the field reporter and then suddenly there are cries and shouts and then all of a sudden the line went dead. The script was well written as well, not to mention the right cue on when the music would be played. The addition of music adds to the suspense. BUT I didn’t live at that particular period and so, I wasn’t affected by the radio drama. I am more used to technologies than those who lived in the 1930’s. They were probably new to the idea of radio and so they might believe everything that they hear. They aren’t used to illusions carried through the radio unlike my generations. They would have been more fooled because of the added music which kept them from blinking. All these summed up totally hypnotized and fooled them, making them to believe that what they hear is true.

PBB's way of communicating
We have been discussing what communication is for the past weeks. I've always thought communicating to others is as easy as breathing. I mean all of us need to communicate to others. Now allow me to SEND you a MESSAGE about what has been bothering me for the past days. Be a good RECEIVER, ok?=)
I love watching Pinoy Big Brother (atleast before the wendy controversy). It shows the adoptability of pinoys to the changes in their environment. We, the pinoys, are generally chismosos and chismosas. That's our nature. It's just who we are. It shows our flexibility and friendliness, and it basically caters the interest of the mass. Watching pbb is for my relaxation, entertainment, or sometimes my escape to the real world of drama. It is not hard to follow the drama that's happening inside the bahay ni kuya. You could watch it every night before you go to bed or while you are studying or when you are simply bored and unable to sleep. It also has updates in between your favorite shows. There's even an update in the wee hours in the morning (pbb uplate). If you are still not contented there's the pbb in studio23. Pbb is basically shown around the clock.
The pbb never fails to uprise the interest of its audience (whether in a good or bad way). There's a lot of controversy in the show. The show uses not only the television as its medium but also the newspaper. Whenever i walk past the newspaper stands, i always find headlines about the shows credibility (specially now). The show is also the topic of most of the radio shows in AM stations. It's everywhere and it seems like a nightmare forever following you.
We the viewers, not only play the receiver of the messages which the pbb sends, but also becomes the sender whenever we react to the controversy that's happpening inside the bahay. We can't help it specially if our blood is boiling because of a particular person (and as for me that's Wendybugs). We send our feelings and opinions for it is our way of releasing our stress and frustation over the show. We sometimes group together to talk about the show. And sometimes we also talk about it publicly like what i am doing now, in our blogs, our multiply, a simple bulletin in our friendsters, or a simple group message passed in the messenger. These feedbacks are important to the show and it sometime measures the popularity of the show.
Pbb has definitely affected its viewers just the same as the viewers have an effect on the show. And both effects and acts have consequences. And that's what we should always remeber.
